Every winter, the water of Lake Suwa freezes over, and most years a long ridge appears in the ice from one side of the lake to the other. Tradition has it that this is the "Omiwatari," or where the Shinto Gods walk out over the ice. This legend has inspired the craftsmen and women at the nearby Shinshu Watch Studio to create SBGY007.
The dial here is ice-blue in color and textured to mimic the undulations of the frozen lake. Inspired by the shape of a wind-filled sail, the stainless steel case measures 38.5mm across and was designed to easily slip under a shirt cuff. A new adaptation of Zaratsu polishing was developed to address the challenge of creating a distortion-free finish on a curved surface.
Housed inside the case is caliber 9R31, which has a Dual Spring Barrel that delivers a power reserve of 72 hours when fully wound. Beautifully finished and visible through an exhibition case back, 9R31 also carries the power reserve indicator over from the dial to the movement.
This design draws its inspiration from the "Omiwatari," a mysterious winter phenomenon in which Lake Suwa, near the Shinshu Watch Studio (the home of Spring Drive watches), freezes completely. The dial evokes the raised ridges that form across the frozen lake's surface, while the tempered blue seconds hand glides smoothly over it.
The watch's form was created specifically to house a slim movement, with flexibility and tension combining to let light play across a subtle ridgeline. Thanks to Zaratsu polishing, its elegant surface is reminiscent of a polished jewel. The sapphire glass features a unique domed shape that makes effective use of light's refractive properties, adding a refined nuance to the dial. While following the Grand Seiko Style, the case presents a distinguished design with a curved form, creating a dignified atmosphere that beautifully suits a refined style of dress.
A manual-winding Spring Drive movement made in the Shinshu Watch Studio, Caliber 9R31 uses the innovative Dual Spring Barrel, which contains two mainsprings set in parallel to deliver a power reserve of 72 hours.
